When people who are not artists visit my studio, the first thing I always do is apologise for the mess, and their reply is always something like: “no, please don’t apologise, I love it! It’s the way it should be…” etc. I have seen some tidy studios in my time though nothing like Hockney’s in this picture. Just look at that floor!!
The painting’s not bad either.

One thing money gives you the opportunity to do is to really get far enough back to REALLY view your own paintings. Nice space.

I know what you mean Jeffrey! In one studio I used to work in we would take the paintings out to the street to be able to get a proper view of how they looked with some distance. All artists should be rich!!

Absolutely agree, everybody should be rich but the rich ones.

Always interesting to see an artist’s studio. Bacon and Hockney work place are in such antipodes!!
Thank you for this page, Simon!

Yes, I’ll post some pictures of Bacon’s studio someday. I just feel that those pictures have been around more and everybody’s seen them. They look much more similar to my studio though!
Thanks to you David for commenting.

All artists should be rich except for those who already are, Gustavo!!

I wasn’t asking for pictures of Bacon’s studio (I’ve seen enough) but merely commenting on the differences between studio enviroments. They differ greatly…

No matter what they say: Hockney never really understood what painting is. I’m not saying he’s not an artist (how should I know?) but certainly he’s not a painter.
as u said… just look at that floor!

I must say I agree that such a clean floor is a little suspect for a painter’s studio, but seriously I think Hockney is a great painter as well as a great artist. Hockney’s obsession isn’t art in general, it’s always painting painting painting. His books such as “That’s The Way I See It”, “The Secret Knowledge” and “David Hockney by David Hockney” are endless reflections and ideas about painting and its frustrations. He has taken enormous risks as an artist throughout his career when it would have been much easier to just repeat his successful formulas and rake in the money.

sorry, but he’s been raking in the money.
And he’s a good writer and knows his theory, no doubt.
For the rest, his paintings are lame and he can go on messing around with his iPad.

I still have to disagree FGJFDHJHGKJKASGH, Hockney has been raking in money because he is a succesful artist, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But he has never taken the easy path as he as far as I can see he has always followed his beliefs and fought for what his thinks is right (which of course doesn’t mean it IS right, but it does mean he is an artist in full). Have you read the books I mention? They are not ‘theory’ books as in ‘art theory’, they are books about painting, abouts thoughts on painting from someone who has been painting and thinking about painting for way more than half a century. I have learnt a lot from these books and from Hockney, despite the fact that some of his work is not good; but that’s what an artist gets when he or she takes risks: some crap works.
But his good works are brilliant, and that includes the painting in this picture as far as I’m concerned.

I like this painting but havnig visited the Terry Rodgers Site I have to say I found the rest of his paintings, the ones on show there anyway, technically excellent but otherwise distasteful.
