LOOKING WEST!

My exhibition in Seville has just come to an end but I’m now fascinated by a joint project that has arisen from it totally unexpectedly though it feels as though it has always been there, like it had to happen sooner or later: Part of my project will be exhibited this week in ArteSantander, a small but very good art fair in the North of Spain that I had the chance to visit a couple of years back and was very impressed (specially by the free beer and not having to walk for miles and miles to see the art).

Of Canyons and Stars, my project based on the music of Olivier Messiaen which is inspired by landscapes of the American West, will be part of a specific project created by the gallery for the fair in combination with the photographs of José Guerrero, an artist who is represented by the same gallery, who quite by chance also has a project based on his travels in exactly the same landscapes that Messiaen visited in the 1970′s. The more I look at Guerrero’s photographs and then look back on the works I created through the winter the more attached they seem to become; once you get over the huge difference in media and visual language, they seem to appear almost identical: the mountain ranges, the pure colours of the rainbow, the haziness… There’s music in those landscapes!

This joint project will be on show from July 30^th to August the 3^rd at ArteSantander in Santander (Spain).

Mi exposición en Sevilla acaba de llegar a su fin pero ahora ando fascinado con el proyecto de colaboración que ha surgido de ella de la manera más inesperada, y que da la sensación de haber estado allí esperando, como que tenía que pasar tarde o temprano. Parte de mi proyecto estará en exposición esta semana en ArteSantander, la pequeña pero intensa feria de arte que tuve ocasión de visitar hace un par de ediciones y que me causó muy buena impresión (sobre todo por la cerveza gratis y no tener que andar kilómetros para ver el arte).

Of Canyons and Stars, mi proyecto basado en la música de Olivier Messiaen que se inspira en paisajes del oeste americano, formará parte de un proyecto específico creado por la galería para la feria en combinación con las fotografías de José Guerrero, que es representado por la misma galería, y que casualmente también tiene un proyecto basado en sus viajes por justo los mismos paisajes que visitó Messiaen en los años 70. Cuanto más me fijo en las obras de Guerrero y más vuelvo la mirada sobre las obras que produje a lo largo del invierno más entrelazadas las veo; una vez que superas las enormes diferencias en el medio y el tipo de lenguaje visual, empiezan a hacerse casi idénticas: las sierras, la pureza de los colores del arco iris, la nebulosidad… ¡Hay música en esos paisajes!

Este proyecto conjunto podrá verse del 30 de julio al 3 de agosto en ArteSantander, Santander (España).
