ON PAINTING

Two paintings from my project The Life and Times of Ernest Ka’ai will be on show as from tomorrow and until the 7th of July at the CAAM art centre in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, as part of the exhibition On Painting; an ambitious exhibition made up of works by more than sixty artists from Spain, Portugal and Latin America, including Juan Uslé, Ángela de la Cruz, José Bedia, Manuel Ocampo, Guillermo Kuitca, Luis Gordillo, Jesús Zurita…

The Life and Times of Ernest Ka’ai is a painting project I developed in 2011/12 that set out to reconstruct the life and music of Hawaian composer Ernest Ka’ai, where fictitious but likely memories from his life are constructed on canvas by using a painting code made up of subtle weaves of finely sprayed primary colours that create an effect similar to that of light when decomposed by drops of water. This project was originally exhibited last year in Madrid at the Álvaro Alcázar Gallery.

The Life and Times of Ernest Ka’ai es un proyecto pictórico que desarrollé en 2011/12 y que partía de la pretensión de reconstruir la vida y la música de compositor hawaiano Ernest Ka’ai, y en el que recuerdos ficticios pero verosímiles de su vida son construidos sobre lienzos mediante un código pictórico formado de sutiles tramas de colores primarios suavemente pulverizados, que crean un efecto similar al de la luz descompuesta por gotas de agua. Este proyecto se expuso originalmente el año pasado en la Galería Álvaro Alcázar.
